This giant tortoise is older than the Eifel Tower

Jonathan is the world’s oldest living land animal at 190 years old, officially recognized by the Guinness World Records. He is a Seychelles giant tortoise and now a long-time resident of the remote South Atlantic Island, St. Helena.

Actually, Jonathan might be a lot older than we think! His age is estimated on the fact that he was fully mature (around 50 years old) when he arrived in St. Helena from Seychelles in 1882. Experts believe Jonathan was born around 1832.

He currently lives on the grounds of Plantation House, the residence of the governor of St. Helena, together with other giant tortoises David, Emma, and Fred.

Despite his age, Jonathan loves to bask under warm sunshine. His vet Joe Hollins says, “He enjoys the sun but on very hot days takes to the shade. On mild days, he will sunbathe – his long neck and legs stretched fully out of his shell to absorb heat and transfer it to his core." He also loves his leafy greens and never misses nap time. They are probably his secret to a long, healthy life!
