This cat is ruler of a village

A yellow cat named "Stubbs" was elected mayor of Talkeetna, Alaska in 1998. The town is home to around 900 people. Stubbs, who enjoyed drinking water and catnip from a margarita glass, became a tourist attraction soon.

To call Talkeetna a small town would be an understatement; with fewer than 900 residents, “village” really does it more justice. In fact, as an unincorporated territory, it’s not even really a town at all. Intimacy, however, means very little in politics. In 1997, the mayoral election sparked apathy in the community, with no candidate deemed worthy enough to lead.

Lauri Stec, manager of Nagley's General Store, chose a kitty from a crate full of abandoned cats at the same moment. She chose a small ginger kitten with no tail, whom she appropriately named "Stubbs."

It was the birth of a political superstar. Talkeetna residents organized a write-in campaign, and Mayor Stubbs the cat was elected as the town's new leader. The townspeople loved him because taxes didn’t rise up and he didn’t interfere with people’s businesses.

Stubbs spent his last 31 months with his adoptive family, the Spones.

Stubbs died in 2016 at the age of 20. His brother, Denali, became his successor.
